Visual Research in Communication: The Kite.

"Ancient and medieval Chinese sources describe kites being used for measuring distances, testing the wind, lifting men, signaling, and communication for military operations." (Needham, J. Science and Civilization in China. Cambridge University Press, 1954. p. 127.)

Kites were used as a form of long distance visual communication. There are semiotic parallels to flag semaphore and the iconography of military standards. This technology was eventually dispersed throughout the world and came to be a recreational past time and art form.
