V&A – Blythe House & CSM : digital collaborations and design exploration
Joan Morrison (CSM – communication)
Leanne (V&A – digital practice)
the brief is :
Looking at the relationship between smartphones and design museums - in this case Blythe House - : how de we privilege our relationship with our technology as part of our creative process? And how can this make access to Blythe House easier?
The outcome is a conceptual endeavor. They want you to find something that is inspirational to YOU.
V&A wants to make the access easier, to move people (designer and/or general public) to see these objects that are often sometimes too fragile to move or hidden behind other objects, tucked away in boxes, or not even recorded. And they want designers (other) to return often.
1. The V&A is a 3D encyclopedia. When it was established at the time of the London World Exhibit, It was created to be the design museum of its time, to show crafts in time and location, for inspiration. And as odd or old as it seems, it was made to show the latest contemporary designs and craft successes.
They have found that Blythe House is :
• not transparent enough
• not well recorded
• imposing
• hidden in terms of access (near Kensington Olympia)
• used for film location
• used for pop up exhibits
• full of different disciplines
• quantity is overwhelming
2. On technology
Smartphones are part of our lives and research has shown that our relation to the smartphone is as a :
• Demon
• Seducer
• Servant
• Spy
• Slave
• Cyborg
• Or other????
We use the smartphone to record, edit films, research, contact
The project will offer :
• Access behind the scenes
• Show how collections are managed
• A way of moving towards a space that people can make sense of
• A way to show all the possibilities, the links that are part of the transformative process (key designer tool)
They are thinking of :
• A process that would encourage transparency
• A thought about Intellectual property
• A blog with comments and thinking
• How can smartphones make this easier
• That you make notes of everything during your visit : the good, the bad and the ugly
• How blythe can adjust to changes
• How blythe house can become a useful tool
